International Workshop on Interventional Cardiology

Eminent International Cardiologists from Japan, Korea, Europe and the US attend the Workshop as Faculty

Hyderabad, September 21: As part of its mission to bring the latest in medical science and research, Yashoda Group of Hospitals launched an international cardiology workshop named ‘Basics and Beyond – 2013, an Interventional Cardiology Update’ at Hyderabad International Convention Center (HICC), Novotel, Madhapur, Hyderabad on 21st & 22nd September 2013.

Interventional Cardiology, a sub-speciality of cardiology that deals specifically with catheter-based treatment of heart diseases, is a rapidly advancing field. As there have been spectacular changes in this sub-speciality with many cardiac catheterization centres now operating even in the small districts and towns in India, it has become important for all the practicing physicians to stay abreast with the latest techniques and cutting-edge developments.

Coronary Heart Disease is growing rapidly and is the top contributor to death in India. As per the National Health Report-2010, India will have the largest heart diseases burden globally and account for 1/3rd of deaths. About 60% of the world’s heart disease population is in India and Indians have a high prevalence of risk factors, and have ischemic heart disease at an earlier age than people in other developed countries

The objective of this workshop is to improve the quality of care using contemporary technology by bringing together all the experts in the field at single platform for knowledge exchange.

The 2-day workshop explored and examined the most complex cases in interventional cardiology in an atmosphere that encourages rigorous exchange between today’s experts and tomorrow’s thought leaders. The workshop featured informed lectures, interactive sessions and debates on the latest trends in Interventional Cardiology involving regional, national, as well as international faculty from Korea, Japan, France and the US.

The workshop opened up discussions on Future Genetics in Cardiovascular Disease, CT Coronary Imaging, Pitfalls in Chest Pain Diagnosis, Newer Anti-platelet Therapy, Adapting Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery, etc.

As expected, the workshop provided all the cardiologists, clinicians and fellows on the options available for treatment of complex coronary problems.

About 500 General Practitioners, Physicians, Cardiologists and Interventional Cardiologists from all over India attended the workshop. Live cases of Coronary Stenting, using latest imaging modalities like IVUS (Intravascular Ultrasound), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) were performed jointly by cardiologists from Yashoda Hospitals and international faculty and relayed at the HICC. All the participants watched the live procedures and interacted with the faculty. The main attraction of the workshop was the latest bio-absorbable stent using OCT guidance.

Dr Pramod Kumar Kuchulakanti, Chairman, Scientific Committee of the workshop said, “Keeping in view the needs of day-to-day practice and the increasing burden of Coronary Disease, ‘Basics and Beyond’ continues its primary objective of in-depth discussion of coronary risk factors, current insights into therapies besides showcasing live, illustrative surgical demonstrations in collaboration with expert international faculty.”

“The workshop is aimed at updating the recent guidelines about coronary risk factors, need for evaluation of asymptomatic high risk patients, new treatment options for coronary heart disease, heart failure. Attendees will discover the latest guideline and evidence-based management of heart diseases to improve patient care and optimize outcomes using this interactive platform that combines live case presentations and break-out discussions”, he further added.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. G. S. Rao, Managing Director, Yashoda Group of Hospitals said, “Yashoda Heart Institute is a leader in heart care with a largest team of cardiologists performing approximately 40,000 procedures per annum. We are the only dedicated centre in the region for Heart & Lung Transplantation and Ventricular Assist Device Therapy. The Institute’s success is the result of over 23-year tradition of caring and innovation nurtured by Yashoda Group of Hospitals. This initiative is a small step in keeping with our aim to increase awareness on medical advancements by sharing our vast knowledge gained over these two decades.”
